ARC 1: THE EMPEROR SCHEMES TO GRAB A MAN’S WIFE (36)

Emperor Yuan listened to her voice, and his taught heartstrings trembled as if they would snap any moment.

He looked at her unrecognizable face and his eyes softened as he forced back the tears that threatened to pour out.

Bowing his head, he kissed her dry lips and moistened them so they would not remain so chapped: "Don't speak!"

He was almost begging her as he said: "Don't speak. The physician will come right away. You’ll get better, A Yan, you will recover. If you have any words to say, wait until you’re well to tell me.”

She watched Emperor Yuan in a trance, and her eyes seemed to be glazed over with a layer of mist.

As if belatedly realizing who he was, her eyes gradually brightened, becoming ever more resplendent. They were like bright torches that had suddenly been lit up in the darkness, and they burned brilliantly.

“Qi’an!” She smiled, and a hoarse voice came out of her parched throat. The cracked voice was out of pitch, but her stained face looked extremely happy: “Qi’an, is this another dream?”

She tried to touch his face but failed despite raising her hands several times. Sensing her movements, Emperor Yuan immediately grabbed her hand and placed it on his face: “It’s me, it’s me. I’m here. I’m here, A Yan. You’re not dreaming. I’m here.”

She was still smiling as blood leaked from her cracked lips. There was no human appearance on her face that was mixed with mud and blood. Only her eyes shone through as they watched him without blinking.

“Qi’an, come soon!” She murmured. Gradually, her smile hardened on her face, and at that moment, the light in her eyes went out.

"I'm here. I'm here, A Yan!" Emperor Yuan was squeezing her hand. He carried her gingerly just past the city gates and placed her on the simple bed his guards had fashioned. He called for the imperial physician to come forward: “Quickly, take a look at A Yan. Heal her wounds!”

The imperial physician was momentarily stunned by the scene of Emperor Yuan holding a man in his arms. He then carefully took Yan Ge’s pulse.

Emperor Yuan held her close as he comforted her: “The physician's here. Don’t be afraid, A Yan. You’ll soon be better.”

The imperial physician’s complexion underwent great changes and he immediately fell to his knees: “Your Majesty.”

His panicked voice was trembling as he said desperately: "Your Majesty, General Ming has already passed away."

He did not wait for Emperor Yuan’s reaction and immediately prostrated himself.

Shortly after, his shoulder was kicked, causing him to stagger back until he crashed against the city gates.

If Emperor Yuan had not been holding Yan Ge, he would have cut the man down: “Charlatan. A Yan is fine. She spoke to me just now. She smiled and looked at me. You charlatan. Someone come, where did the army physician go?”

The soldiers both inside and outside the tent all knelt down in unison.

The person who came in this time was not a military physician, but Song Qing.

He knelt beside the bed and quietly took Yan Ge’s pulse.

Emperor Yuan was still murmuring to Yan Ge as he held onto her hand: "Don't be afraid, A Yan. Wait until you’re better. I'll bring you back to the palace and find the best physician. You'll be all right.”

Song Qing looked up at Emperor Yuan in utter shock.

When Emperor Yuan saw that he was just taking Yan Ge’s pulse, he was upset and shouted: "Just when will you take care of her illness? Don’t you see how grave A Yan's chest injury is? If you cure your General Ming, Zhen promises to make you an imperial physician. If you dare act perfunctory, Zhen will exterminate your nine clans.”

When the last words fell, Song Qing’s eyes reddened. His face distorted so much that he appeared malevolent.
