ARC 1: THE EMPEROR SCHEMES TO GRAB A MAN’S WIFE (27)
Song Qing would not normally question Yan Ge, but today was different. He walked up two steps and nearly begged her: "Listen to Uncle Song, don’t act brave right now. Song Wei will take a squadron and you will stay in Fengcheng to prepare for the retreat.”
When he saw Yan Ge ignoring him, his eyes turned red. He scolded her in a low voice: “You now carry the sole heir of the Ming family. If you won’t think about yourself, think of the Ming family—”
Yan Ge interrupted: “Song Wei is your only son, why don't you think of him!”
Song Qing choked on his words. She spoke again: "Rest assured, I know what to do.”
Walking to the desk, she picked up five letters and gave them to him: "Send a letter once a day to Wucheng. Do not forget when the time comes.”
Wucheng had cut off the road to Jingcheng. Even if these letters were important military secrets meant to be sent without delay, that general in Wucheng was ultimately the one to decide whether they would be delivered to the capital.
After handing over the letters to Song Qing, she sat at the desk again, ground the brush, then wrote something intermittently on the paper.
She wrote two letters and a large envelope encased a smaller one. After stuffing the Ming family’s tiger tally1 in the larger envelope, she solemnly handed it to Song Qing: "Have Song Wei find a way to sneak into Wucheng and then personally deliver to His Majesty's hands. He must deliver it to His Majesty with his own hands posthaste!”
Song Qing saw that Yan Ge had even packed the tiger tally in the envelope and knew the importance of the letter. He immediately received it: "I will find Song Wei. General, you should rest."
Yan Ge nodded and narrowed her eyes.
The barbarians wanted to capture Fengcheng before winter, so the intervals between their sieges had become shorter.
That night, Yan Ge led a team of men and horses out the western gate and went straight for the barbarians’ main campsite.
She brought few people on this trip. In order to travel lightly, she and her companions only carried half a day's rations.
As Yan Ge and the Ming Army soldiers were engaging in guerilla warfare with the barbarians in Dongduo, Emperor was sitting on a chaise stroking the copper coin in his hand.
A secret guard appeared silently behind him: "Your Majesty, Minister Luo’s third daughter has arrived in Jingcheng."
Emperor Yuan's movements paused.
His lips moved, but he did not know what to say.
He wanted to meet her, but he was afraid.
He did not know how much she knew about the military situation at the border. He was afraid she would find out what he did to Ming Lan, but he was more afraid she would beseech him to let Ming Lan go.
He stared at the copper coin and only asked after a long time had passed: "Has she grown accustomed to the Luo household?”
"Third lady Luo’s health is not good. The journey was arduous and she has not yet adjusted to the capital. She is currently bedridden.”
Emperor Yuan smiled slightly when he heard those words. She was obstinate when outside, but as soon as she arrived home, she turned into a delicate miss too weak to stand up to the wind. Thirty days in a month was spent in a sickly state. If he had not met her, he may never have known about this ‘delicate’ third lady Luo his entire life.
It may not even take another month for good news to arrive from the border. The headache that was the Ming family will be resolved, the military power will be recovered, and he could still be with his cherished girl. Emperor Yuan’s mood improved in a flash.
He wrapped the coin’s string around his hand. There was a smile in his voice as he ordered Eunuch Su: “Go find an imperial physician to take a look at third Lady Luo’s illness. The girl’s body is weak, and the root cause must not be overlooked.”

ReplyDeleteIsn't chapter 30 supposed to be (27) and 31 supposed to be (28)? Why are both chapter 30 and 31 the same? Is there something wrong with the website or did you accidentally do this? I can't find (27) of this arc.
